To combine expressive calligraphy and the representational characteristics of line in the same image.
Materials:
Drawing materials: pencil, ink, crayon, and paper.
Method:
Select a few moderately complex subjects. Draw these experimentally in a continuous contour line, defining the subject while allowing the drawing instrument to roam freely, to make sudden changes in direction, and to overlap itself. The line should dwell in some areas, improvising as it moves steadily and directly from one area to another. Try drawing quickly as well as slowly. The intention is to produce works that are definitive and spontaneous, expressive and disciplined. The line should have calligraphic qualities. (Fig. 3.1A)
